So I’ve been slogging through Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov as part of my quest to read more than 6 books on the NEA Top 100 reading list.
It’s tough going.
I don’t like this book.
I hate the subject matter.
I hate how Humbert tries to justify his loathsome actions. They are unjustifiable. He’s a child molester, pure & simple.
I hate how the critics laud this book as a masterpiece. It’s not. It’s a pathetic attempt to explain pedophilia in a literary way.
The only reason I’m still reading it is that I’m hoping something truly horrible will happen to Humbert. He deserves nothing less.
If you’ve read it, go ahead and spoil it for me. Tell me something terrible happens to him. Please.
I’ve never read it. But I looked it up online. If you’re looking for something more troubling than (maybe) jail and a broken heart? Just stop reading now.
Damn. I was hoping for something that involved a melon scoop and his testicles.
Yes, Humbert gets castrated and the decides to become a woman. Uh ok…I actually have not read it sorry…
I’m going with that ending, Moonspun. It’s much better than where that piece of trash was heading.
I have been told by several literary types that criticism of this book is unfair and that I should give it a chance. Considering all the wonderful pieces of literature I will not have time to read in this busy life, I’ll pass. I admire your fortitude.
You are a smart lady.
